Cora B. Pinckens

Cora Mae Brooks Pinckens, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2020. She was born on Wednesday, April 13, 1932, to the late James Louis Brooks and Golda Mae Wales Brooks. Cora accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Clair Memorial Methodist Church, in Irvington, Kentucky. She attended church school and was a member of the Junior Choir. She graduated from Hardinsburg Training High School in Hardinsburg, Kentucky, Class of 1950. She enrolled at Kentucky State College, majoring in Elementary Education. Upon completion of Kentucky State, she met Blakely, who served in the United States Army, at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Shortly thereafter, they were joined in holy matrimony on June 16, 1956. Their son, Cedric Durrell was born in December of 1959. Cora taught in the Dorchester and Caroline County Public School Systems, where she dedicated her life to the teaching profession for a total of 33 years. During this time, both she and Blakely obtained their Master’s Degrees in Education at Indiana University, in Bloomington, Kentucky. Cora received numerous awards of which included Caroline County Teacher of the Year and Maryland State Teacher’s Hall of Fame. Cora’s civic and community activities were as follows: Board of Directors for Caroline County Habitat for Humanity, escort for the Easton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Caroline County Retired School Personnel and a member of Zion United Methodist Church. She served as President of the Zion United Methodist Women for more than 20 years. Other organizations include: Mary Jane Henry Eastern Star, John H. Jones Assembly #284 Order of the Golden Circle, the Daughters of Isis, under the sisterhood of Adulahab Shriners, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., and Federalsburg Outreach Group (F.O.G.), in which she held many offices throughout the years. Cora is survived by her son, Dr. Cedric D. Pinckens (Joana) of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Roche’ D. Pinckens and Camille V. Davidson (Darel); two great-grandchildren, Melaina and Mikai Phillips. Also surviving are two brothers-in-law, Marion George Pinckens and Jimmy Mills; two sisters-in-law, Cleo M. Beulah and Jacqueline N. Pinckens; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
