Chauncey L. Kellam Sr.

Chauncey “Dick” Lee Kellam, Sr., formerly of Laurel, Delaware, passed away peacefully at his home in Lincoln, DE on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. He was born in Melfa, Virginia on March 13, 1944 to the late Daisey Marie Kellam and Roy Mears. Chauncey received his early education with the Laurel Public School System and attended the William C. Jason High School in Georgetown, DE. He served in the United States Army and fought in the Vietnam War, where he was honorably discharged. Chauncey loved going fishing, crabbing, and pitching horseshoes. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends telling jokes and countless Vietnam stories. He loved watching professional wrestling and Westerns on TV. He enjoyed attending church with his daughter occasionally at New Beginnings Outreach Ministries in Laurel, DE, under the leadership of Pastor Floyd Bivens. Chauncey was well known for helping others whenever called upon. On any given Saturday or Sunday, you would find him fixing someone’s car or doing other favors. He had a special bond with each one of his grandchildren and always liked to check up on them. He looked forward to Sunday dinners and holiday meals prepared by his daughters on a regular basis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie Kellam and Roy Mears; his son, Carey Kellam and sisters: Cherie Bolden, Sylvia Joanne Johnson, and Rosalee Johnson. He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Sandra Kellam of Lincoln, DE; five children: Chaunda (Derrick) Matthews of Laurel, DE, Chauncey (Alena) Kellam, Jr. of Lincoln, DE, Angela (Timothy) Williams of Laurel, DE, Cheryl Nabors of Chapel Hill, NC and Cassandra Kellam of Milford, DE; one daughter-in-law, Barbie Kellam of Alexandria, VA; three children whom he helped raise: Veronica Pettyjohn of Lincoln, DE, Kevin (Diane) Pettyjohn of Harrington, DE and Orlando Pettyjohn of Milford, DE; three sisters: Sara Watson of Accomack, VA, Florence (Carl Lee) Stanley of Laurel, DE and Betty Kellam of Bridgeville, DE; one friend who was like a brother, Charles (Geraldine) Horsey of Laurel, DE; three sisters-in-law: Connie Steward of Milton, DE, Joan Jones of Dumfries, VA and Inez (Ty) Dexter of Zambia, Africa; three brothers-in-law: Charles Steward, William Steward and Wayne Banks all of Bridgeville, DE; one aunt, Gertrude Winder of Seaford, DE; eight grandchildren: Chaniqua, Levi Jr., Katara, Jazmine, Jordan, Leslie Jr., Kalah and Deshawn; five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
