Charles Albert Green

Charles A. Greene, son of the late Allie Greene and the late Rev. Dr. Walter Hayward Greene, was born on January 22, 1943 in Greenville, North Carolina. He departed this life on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover, DE after a long illness. Charles led a life full of love for the Lord and his family, as well as his church, community, and the country which he served proudly as a member of the United States Army, Army Reserves, and Army National Guard His wife, Virginia D. Greene, a brother, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth H. Greene, Sr., and a step brother Leroy McFadden, Jr. preceded him in death. Charles received his early education in Greenville, NC and attended York Memorial AME Zion Church with his mother and his two brothers, Kenneth and James Greene. In 1961, he graduated from CM. Eppes High School in Greenville. He then attended Maryland State College in Princess Anne, Maryland, before joining the Army in 1963. He worked as an army radio mechanic, serving both in the United States and abroad in Germany before retiring from active duty with an Honorable Discharge in 1966. He served with the Army Reserves for three years then with the 261st Signal Brigade/Delaware Army National Guard in Dover, DE from 1979 until 2003, retiring as a Master Sergeant after a total of 29 years of service. In 1966, Charles married his high school sweetheart, Virginia D. Whitehurst, and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he worked for Westinghouse. Their only child, Shonda, was born in 1967 in Philadelphia. In 1968, the family moved to Dover, DE, where Charles worked for Standard Brands (later Reichold Chemical), and Virginia worked as an English teacher for the Capital School District. Charles and his family also became active members at Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Dover, DE, where his father, the late Dr. W. Hayward Greene, served as pastor. He returned to school and attended Delaware State College, graduating in 1975 and receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he became a member of the Dover Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc./Dover, DE in the spring of 1976. Committed to his fraternity, he became a Life Member in 1979 and was the holder of several offices, including the office of Keeper of Records and Polemarch. Charles was also awarded Kappa of the Year during his Kappa journey. Although Charles was prevented physically from active participation, he remained keenly interested in Kappa endeavors. With the assistance of his daughter, brother James (also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi), and visits from his fraternity brothers, he continued to keep abreast of fraternity activities. Charles worked for Getty Oil Refinery in Delaware City, DE, Shore Up! Inc. in Salisbury, MD, and as a substitute teacher for the Capital School District. He was employed by the Delaware Dept. of Corrections as a Delaware State Correctional Officer and worked at the Gander Hill Correctional Facility in Wilmington, DE, where he eventually retired after more than 20 years of service. He was married to his loving wife Virginia for 42 years until her passing in 2009. The two of them loved to vacation together, especially after their mutual retirement and with their close family friends, Carl and Geneva Fennell. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports, participating in the Whatcoat UMC Men's Bible Study, Security Team, Evangelism Explosion, Prayer Ministry, the Stewardship committee and mentoring young persons. Although he was diagnosed with ALS in 2008, he did not allow his illness to keep him from "fighting the good fight". He was well known and loved by his CNAs, the staff at Delaware Hospice in Dover, DE, and the doctors/staff at the ALS Clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, making sure that he knew EVERYONE by name. Although Charles was having difficulties physically, he always managed to keep up with everyone's activities, always asking how they and their families were doing. Many persons came to see him as a "spiritual father" and called him an inspiration to anyone who came to know him. He leaves to mourn, his devoted daughter, the Reverend (Dr.) Shonda R. Greene of Dover, DE; his mother-in-law, Emma Newton Whitehurst of Greenville, NC; his stepmother, Thelma Tanner Greene of Delmar, DE; his brother, Dr. James C. Greene and sister-in-law Kathleen Greene of Fort Washington, MD; his sister-in-law, the Reverend Sandra Greene of Baltimore, MD; two God-children, Darius Fennell of North Brunswick, NJ and LaQuia Turner of Elkton, MD; a nephew, Kenneth H. Greene, Jr. (Youlander); a niece, Kia M. Greene (Kiana); four stepsisters, Laverne (Theodore, Jr.) Jarmon of Waldorf, MD, Dorothy McFadden-Wallace of Upper Marlboro, MD, Hester Mae (John) Elzey of Salisbury, MD, Edith Mc Fadden of Washington, D.C., and many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
