YEARS OF A ROAD RUNNER 0-4 Years Baby steps is what I remember, when I welcomed my son into this world. As I held Charles Howard Ahman Faulk in my arms, I felt his spirit, and will always cherish the memories, while adoring his birth and presence on July 15, 1997. God had given us an angel, and my angel sported his wings on July 18, 2019. Charles was born to Charles Faulk, Jr. and Carol Faulk-Cottman. Charles’ mom, Carol, was his protector, best friend and back-bone. At this early age, Little Charles was extremely active, with his late grandmother C.J., who contributed to instilling fearlessness, and his belief in God. His dad taught him the fundamentals of chess which would later bridge to keen insight at an early age. Charles began school at the age of two, at the Center for Creative Learning (CCL). During this period, Aunt Grace was a nurturing babysitter for Charles and due to the strong cornerstone and foundation of those who loved him, we knew early on as a toddler that Charles would succeed in life… At the same time, he met his first friend, Tommy Ervin, in primary school. As a result of their friendship, Charles was introduced to his enthusiasm for sports and was widely accepted and warmly welcomed into the lives of his new friends and their families. It’s very appropriate to say that Charles had a vibrant spirit and smile that was very infectious. Coupled with his growing passion for sports, Little Charles played various instruments including the clarinet, piano, and drums, which planted the seed of his music career. 5-9 Years Charles left CCL, and continued his education at Emmanuel Lutheran School. He continued playing soccer thereon, however, after the first year he had a change of heart, and decided to pursue baseball, basketball and then eventually football. Charles was born with a team player/competitive nature, remaining strong-willed and courageous. His grandmother C.J. filled him with so much ambition that he succeeded at accomplishing whatever he set his mind to, undoubtedly, they had an unbreathable bond. Charles loved meeting new people and his competitive nature led him to meet his inseparable friend Farooq. While on the Eastern Shore with his cousins Buddy, Trey and Keem, they spent endless hours at the basketball court. Although, his cousins were much older than Charles, they still made a worthwhile connection schooling him with pointers on the court. Also, his late Cousin Curtis taught him how to embrace the country-side. During the summer, they both cherished each other’s company, and awaited to embark on the next new cool thing; like riding dirt bikes or finding hidden gems in the forest. Later on, Charles would later be recognized by Pop Warner in Florida for his academic achievements and sports accolades. 10-13 Years Charles continued his education at Emmanuel Lutheran. He loved math and solving equations. This was the beginning of Charles using his mathematical expertise to further his career. He then attended Westowne Elementary School /Catonsville Middle School, where he met several friends and mentors. Many coaches left an everlasting impact on his life, such as Coach Roscoe, Coach Everett, Coach Tommy, and Coach Rodney in football. Also, his basketball coaches, Coach Tommy, Coach Nick, Coach Dorsey and Coach Dion were also instrumental in helping Charles reach his full potential on and off the field. Charles was an asset to any team that he played for. His godfather Reggie, was extremely instrumental with his upbringing. He enjoyed the country life and this fulfilled his need to release his energy. Charles was moving from a young boy to a young man. Around this time, he started spending time with his first cousins and sharing his interest in sports. His grandmother C.J. taught him how to be independent and helped him become the man that we knew and loved. Just before Charles’ 13th birthday, he was introduced to his stepdad, Robert Cottman, Sr. (Mr. Rob) who was like a father to him. His step-father was instrumental in his development, and persistent in guiding him on what to expect and how to keep on a steady path to success—family, career and selflove. 14-17 Years Charles moved from Catonsville High to Pikesville High. While still trying new things, he practiced boxing. This was exciting for his step-father because of his experiences with boxing. For Charles, this was short lived due to the hard hits! Most of his time was spent developing and executing his brilliant plans. Eventually he graduated from Frederick Douglas High School in 2015 a year early, and worked in the afternoon still maintaining his balance between family and his love for music. Charles and Farooq wanted to be entrepreneurs. He inherited his grandmother’s Toyota Corolla and started driving before as soon as he knew is surrounding. Charles was extremely assertive, strong-willed, and determined. He mastered his leadership and negotiating skills at an early age. 18-22 Years Charles enrolled into Morgan State University and completed a year in the General Studies program. He knew music was his passion and he was also inspired to be a writer and performer. He began to travel the world and collaborated with various artists such as Rylo Rodrigruez. Quando Rondo, Qdafool and others. Upon expanding his musical consciousness, he founded MBM, (Making Boss Moves, LLC) where he operated as the President and CEO. Charlie was working on his latest project Tales of a Road Runner, and recently met with Rel Carter (A&R) for Roc Nation who offered Charlie a distribution partnership. Charles was vocal in the hip-hop community and rap music genre. Charles met Donnyell Solomon (Yellie) and her daughter Queen. In due time, Charles welcomed his son King, and without a doctor present, he hand delivered their child. Charles welcomed his son King, who was born on February 10, 2018, ironically the same date of his beloved Uncle Thomas (T.J.) Charles took the place of my brother, and now King will carry on Charles’ legacy. Charles spent unlimited hours making King and Queen laugh; he gave them unconditional love. We are now honored to have the opportunity to express who Charles really was to us. He had a witty sense of humor, and an outstanding visibility to help and care for others. Keeping God first, and touching bases with his mother for dinner, conversing about current endeavors to receive a ‘motherly approval’ truly gives us a glimpse of his willing heart.
