Catherine Ann Murray

Catherine Ann Murray, fondly know as “Honey”, of Worton, Maryland, the daughter of the late Bernard Smith and Bernice Lomax was born on March 8, 1944 in Chestertown, Maryland. She relinquished her earthly life to her heavenly home on Jun 18, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. She was educated at Kent County Public Schools, graduating from Garnett High School. In 1972, she started working at Echo Hill Camp, where her career blossomed. Catherine met many people from all around the world, many of whom had the good fortune to partake of her culinary delights. In the summer of 1972, Honey began working at Echo Hill Camp. When Peter Rice started the Echo Hill Outdoor School in the fall of that same year, he convinced Honey to stay on and become the head chef for the school, and from that point on, her career blossomed and there was no looking back!! Honey mastered any dish she set her mind to. She had a natural ability to make delicious food. Her specialties were white potato pie, lasagna, macaroni and cheese and most recently her Jamaican scallop dish…..passing her culinary skills on to her children. She enjoyed cooking with her mother and sisters and for the community. She was fiercely protective of the pepperoni pizza recipe that she used to make pizza for all the kids. She knew the children would enthusiastically request Miss Honey to make their favorite! Catherine’s extravagant generosity to all will be tremendously missed. She was a member of Christian Chapel of Love United Methodist Church, was in the Blue Ribbon Chorus and served on the Membership Committee. She shared many tasty dishes for church events. As a young girl she love to be “rough and tumble” in Bigwoods, enjoying the outdoors and sports with her family and many of her classmates. She had a wonderful sense of humor which carried over into adulthood. Honey greatly missed her love, her husband of over forty years, Walter “Jonas” Samuel Murray, Jr. She reflected on special memories with solitude and humor. She demonstrated her love through her commitment as his caregiver during his many years of illness, until her preceded her in death in 2015. Honey’s children, Cheryl, Terence and Sheldon, were the loves of her life and she doted on her seven grands and great-grands. Honey was preceded in death by siblings, William Pete and Louise Shorter and brother-in-law Sylvester Harris. Cherishing Catherine’s memory are her siblings, Alonzo Smith (Francine), Shirley Warren, Charles Smith, Hannah Henry, and Vanessa Lomax; daughter, Cheryl Jacobs Torres; sons, Terence and Sheldon (Chanell) Murray; step-daughters, Valerie Murry and Rhonda Boyer; grandchildren, Cherelle Wilson, Terence Murray Jr., Catherine Torres, Nashell Murray, Grant Strickling, Tylanta Wilson, and Alesha Williams; great-grand children, Kamryn Murray, Haven Wesley, Maddison Murray, and Malcolm Murray; in-laws Francene, Betty, Florence and John; other family members, Jorge Torres & Shelly Murray.
