Bernice West

Bernice West, at the age of eighty-one (81), went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Delaware. Bernice was born on July 9, 1939 in Painter, Virginia to the late Henry and Willie Mae Bailey. She was the middle daughter of six children. As a child, her heart’s desire was to become a daycare provider. She started a home daycare in the 1980’s where she loved caring for her daycare children and they loved her back. Some of Bernice’s hobbies included reading the Bible, taking care of her plants, cooking, cutting out recipes, and listening to Lee Williams and Bishop GE Paterson. Bernice was passionate about her home and always kept it clean and organized. As a faithful member at St. John AME Church, she served on the Usher Board Ministry and Missionary Board. She loved the Lord with all her heart and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was “ Mom” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. “Mom” always made sure the family came together at her house for Sunday dinners. She loved to cook for her family; chicken and dumplings, homemade rolls, collard greens and her famous lemonade. In addition to her parents, Henry and Willie Mae Bailey, Bernice was preceded in death by her late husband, Douglas L. West, five siblings, Edward Davis, Richard Davis (Bud), Eva Davis, Ernest Davis, and Lucy Davis; one grandchild, Keywine West and two great grandchildren, Jabriell Smith and Justice West. She is survived by: two daughters, Dale Shockley (Ernest) and Brenda Johnson, both of Millsboro, Delaware; two sisters, Olise Johnson (Thomas) of Millsboro, Delaware and Eunice Davis of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Chasity West of Laurel, Delaware and favored Keith West, Jr. of Millsboro, Delaware, Keziah Carey of Dover, Delaware, Ke’ryha West of Laurel, Delaware, Nevaeh West of Millsboro, Delaware and Knyles West of Seaford, Delaware; two great-great grandchildren, Briella Smith of Millsboro, Delaware and Brayden Smith of Millsboro, Delaware; one special child she held near her heart, Nasir Horsey of Center Point, Alabama and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
