Bernadette Joynes

Obituary Minister Bernadette Joynes, the beloved daughter of the late Geneva Justice Godwin, was born on July 27, 1962 in Northampton County, Virginia. She departed this life on Thursday, April 11, 2019. Bernadette was preceded in death by her mother, her father Percy Joynes and two brothers. Minister Bernadette Joynes received her education in the public schools of Accomack County, VA. At an early age, she confessed her belief in Christ and joined Friendship United Methodist Church in Wattsville, VA, until relocating to Portsmouth, VA. She truly loved the Lord. She served as a student support monitor, substitute teacher, Virginia Defense Force, over thirty (30) years in the medical field, a security guard at Tyson's Foods, and a laborer at Perdue in Accomac, Virginia. She received the Best Performance Award in 1986 from L Company 3D Battalion 2D Brigade from the VA Defense Force. Upon relocating to Portsmouth, VA, she later joined the New Testament Church in Portsmouth, VA where she was an acute member. In her leisure, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, helping people in the community, reading her Bible, and providing counseling to those who needed it. She loved to go to thrift stores and yard sales. Most of all she adored and loved her family, loved cooking and imitating others. She was also an artist and a poet who did not like negativity and would put a positive spin on any situation. She leaves to cherish her fond memories: her sons, Terrance (Shawnda) Joynes of Portsmouth, VA; Marcus Joynes of Chesapeake VA and Michael Joynes (Jaria) of Painter, VA; six (6) grandchildren; a stepfather, Edward Godwin of New Church, VA; 3 sisters, Antoinette Joynes of New Church, VA, Cordelia Wilcox of Goldsboro, NC and Kimberly Joynes of Pocomoke, MD; one brother, Tramayne Joynes (LaToya) of Melfa, VA; two uncles, Arthur (Darlene) Dickerson of Accomac, VA and Jerry Justice (Cynthia) of Temperanceville, VA; aunts, Mae Holden Johnson of Bridgeton, New Jersey and Joyce Dickerson of Pocomoke, MD and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving relatives and friends.
