Bennie L. Dunn Sr.

“A dad is a man who has enough love in his heart for all the lucky people he calls family.” Bennie Lee Dunn, Sr. was born to Susana Dunn and Harlest Williams on April 22, 1941, in Wake Forest, North Carolina. A Time to Plant Bennie was educated in the Wake Forest School District and graduated from Dubois High School. Following graduation, Bennie enlisted in the Unites States Navy, where he received an Honorable Discharge after 2 years of service. During his time of service, Bennie was stationed in San Diego, California. He relocated to Rockville Centre, New York in 1961, where he worked for Nassau County Department of Public Works as a Common Laborer. After years of dedicated service, he was promoted to Assistant to the Commissioner of Highways and was able to retire from this position with 33 years of tireless service. Bennie was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church for many years and was a member of the Male Chorus. Bennie loved to sing and dance, as well as capture precious moments with his camera or video camera. Always impeccably dressed, Bennie’s infectious smile would light up any room. While he enjoyed various hobbies, his passion was landscaping, and Bennie’s lawn and gardens were stiff competition for those found in magazines like “Better Homes and Gardens”. He was known as “Pop”, “Dad”, and “Father” to many, as he touched numerous lives through his never-ending kindness and selflessness. A Time to Love Bennie married the love of his life, Ellen Eason, on March 25, 2005. Although they married later in life, everyone they encountered believed they were a couple of far more years. Mom and Pop Dunn, as they were affectionately known, touched the lives of many and served as an example of love personified to all. Bennie and Ellen relocated to Dover, Delaware, in 2007, and soon joined Crossroad Christian Church, where he served as a devoted member of the Able Men Ministry. A Time to Mourn Bennie went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, surrounded by loved ones, following a brief illness. Bennie is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Susanne. Here to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, his “Sweets”, Ellen Dunn; his children, Yma Burke, Bennie Dunn, Jr., Dana Dunn, Danielle Dunn, Dennis Dunn, Stephanie Dunn-Hollie, Vernon Harris, Jordan Haynes, and Rodney Lucas; several grand and great-grand children; and a host of other family members and friends.
