Belle Jeanette Wickes

Belle Jeanette Wickes was born on October 4, 1935 to the late Ernest and Ethel Johnson in Rock Hall, Maryland. She departed this life, suddenly and peacefully, at her home on Tuesday, May 30, 2017. Belle was educated in the Kent County public school system. Belle met, fell in love and married her soul mate, Admiral Wickes. From this union two sons, Anthony and Gregory, were born. Belle was raised in the church, met the Lord at an early age, and was a lifelong, dedicated and faithful member of Holy Trinity A.M.E. Church. Belle especially enjoyed taking care of the pastors who served at Holy Trinity and took great pride in her position as Pastor’s Steward. She also loved serving as Missionary President and Communion Stewardess and willingly offered her services in any capacity the church needed. She was very close to and appreciative of her faithful supporter and Spiritual Brother, Henry Cotton. Belle lived in New York for many years before returning to Edesville and establishing her own business called “Belle’s Place”. She also did industrial work for many years before the unfortunate loss of her eye sight. Belle was especially close to her sister Alice. They talked everyday and enjoyed a very special bond with each other. Belle was a vivacious, joyful, fun-loving person who loved to party and have a good time and live life to the fullest. She possessed an infectious smile and hearty laugh that just made you want to be around her. She was an independent woman with and entrepreneurial spirit, who knew how to get things done. Belle was highly intelligent with a sharp mind and a photographic memory. She was known as the local telephone directory because she kept everybody’s statistics in her head, such as birthdays, special dates, weddings, anniversaries, etc. After she lost her sight, she was able to quote all of the church rituals by heart. Belle loved family, family gatherings and summer picnics, especially when crabs were on the menu. She enjoyed being with her family from Baltimore, Maryland and Dover, Delaware during the holidays. Belle was preceded in death by her loving husband, Admiral. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving, faithful, dedicated and devoted son, Gregory and her oldest son, Anthony; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one dearly beloved sister, Alice Cann; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
