Barbara S Lawrence

Barbara Secola Lawrence was born August 28th 1935 in Switzerland South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Horace and Corinne Edwards. She was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and graduated from William Penn High School in 1953. Following High School she was employed by Bell telephone as a phone operator. During the 1960’s she attended special trading to become a medical secretary and billing specialist. She worked throughout the Philadelphia area to include; University of Pennsylvania Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She was active in her career until retirement. On March 5th, 1955 she married Junius Lawrence. The couple was married for 49 years until the passing of her husband in 2004. After waiting ten years for a child, the couple was blessed with a son, Philip Edward born on their tenth wedding anniversary, March 5th 1965. Barbara was a friendly, personal and extremely passionate person. She opened her home up to family, friends and people she didn’t know. Always offering them a meal or a warm place to stay Barbara loved cooking and spent hours watching the cooking channel, always eager to try new recipes out on family and friends. She was well known in the community for her culinary delights and was known for her lasagna, beef stew and pineapple up-side down cake. Her son, Philip’s favorite was her lemon pound cake and she would often have a cake ready for his visits. It was always obvious when good friend, Steve was visiting because there was always something special cooking on the stove and the mouthwatering aroma filled her home. Barbara was a multi-talented lady who also enjoyed drawing from a young age and was a fabulous cartoon artist. However, she was best known for her sewing and her ability to construct dolls. She often gave the dolls away as gifts but was also very successful at selling them at local vendors such as; craft fairs. Barbara was also an avid gardener and especially enjoyed planting rose bushes. She enjoyed attending church, watching movies and participating in activities at the local Modern Maturity Center. Most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with family. Barbara touched many people’s lives with her passion and engaging personality. She will truly be missed. Barbara departed this life on May 31st 2016. She was surrounded by her family.
