Obituary Argatha Lee Powell, a resident of Snow Hill, MD peacefully transitioned from labor to eternal rest on February 18, 2026 at the age of ninety (90). Born on January 24, 1936, in Snow Hill, Maryland, she was the daughter of Homer and Hattie Corbin Shockley, both of whom preceded her in death. From an early age, she displayed a spirit of strength, compassion, and quiet determination that would define her life and bless all who knew her. She attended Worcester High School and carried herself with dignity, grace, and resilience throughout her years. At an early age, she accepted Christ and became a devoted and faithful member of Hutt’s Memorial United Methodist Church, where her service and dedication were unwavering. She faithfully served on the Usher Board, as a Communion Stewardess, and on the Administrative Board Council. If there was ever a question about the church — its history, its operations, or its members — she did not have to guess or hesitate. She knew! Her commitment to her church family was steadfast, and her presence was dependable. She did not simply attend church; she was an active pillar within it. “Gate”, as she was fondly known, did for everyone — family, friends, and even neighbors, carrying a servant’s heart and freely giving her time, her resources, and her unwavering love without condition. If someone needed help, she was there. If something needed to be done, she stepped in. Her generosity was natural, her care was genuine, and her heart was open. She lovingly took in her nephew, “Pee Wee” (David Shockley), at just eight years old and raised him as her own, demonstrating her boundless capacity for love, sacrifice, and responsibility. Family was not just important to her — it was everything. She was a hardworking woman who believed in providing for her family and serving others. She retired from Perdue Farms after more than twenty years of faithful service. Throughout her lifetime, she also worked at Buddy Boys and Swift, and she provided private sitting care for many in the community. Even in her work, she nurtured and cared for others. Serving people was not simply what she did; it was who she was. She leaves to cherish her precious and enduring memory with her five devoted children: Johnny Powell, George Powell (Raynetta), Essie Powell-Brown (Benjamin), Charles Powell, and Iona Powell Dashiell (Gregory). She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, church family, and dear friends who will forever carry her love in their hearts. Her life was a testimony of faith, sacrifice, strength, and unconditional love. Though our hearts ache, we rejoice knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Her legacy will continue to live on in every life she touched, in every lesson she taught, and in every act of love she demonstrated. Well done, good and faithful servant. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roosevelt W. Powell, her six siblings, James Shockley, Charles Shockley, Agnes Duncan, Virgil Shockley, twin sister Doretha Jenkins, and Gertude Shockley and her beloved parents.
