Alice K. Wisher

On January 18, 2013, the last page in the book of life was written for Alice Kathleen Wisher. She moved out of her old house, into her new home in glory. Alice Kathleen Wisher was born on May 2, 1911, in Caroline County, Maryland, to Benjamin Franklin Wisher and Rosa Lee Johnson Wisher. Alice was the third child and first-born daughter of 12 children. She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Rosa Leoma and Sadie; five brothers; four sisters; one niece; three nephews and one great-nephew. She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Albert Wilkerson and to this union two children were born. Eventually, Alice’s family moved from Maryland to Delaware. Alice had to grow up quickly, in order to become Mother’s little helper. Her brother, James, came swiftly behind her, 20 months later. As more siblings arrived, Alice grew more responsible in helping her mother. Eventually she began to go to her father’s job, pick up his check, cash it and take it home to her mother. In her early 20’s, Alice accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was filled with the Holy Ghost. In her quest for more of the Lord and a better station in life, Alice took her daughter, Leoma, and moved to Brooklyn, New York. Alice began her work in ministry, teaching the Word of God, as the Lord moved in her life, and as she grew the more in Him. Eventually, she was licensed, as an Evangelist. Alice’s ministry led her to begin helping Pastors start and build their churches. Some of the Pastors were: The Late Mother Feemster, The Late Elder McKinley Coleman and The Late Elder T.C. Taylor. Alice’s prowess in the kitchen was handed down from her mother. She was an excellent cook, as were most of her siblings and her daughter. You name it she cooked it. She even got into baking and stuffing whole fish. Her sweet potato pies were second to none. Alice was led to the Mt. Sinai Church of God In Christ, under the leadership of The Late Bishop Clarence Lewis Sexton, who was an Elder at that time. There she served in many capacities including, serving on the Mother’s Board. She was also a great Pastor’s aide leader. Her beloved daughter, Leoma was her pride and joy. They worked together in the same church, where Leoma was the first church clerk. They also lived together. Alice served at Mt. Sinai C.O.G.I.C. until her health made it impossible to attend church regularly. Alice was a born nurturer. She took in people who had hit a rough patch in their lives. They were allowed to stay, until they were back on their feet. She also took care of her siblings in their illnesses. She retired from The Creedmore State Hospital in New York. There she cared for patients with mental and emotional problems. When Alice’s baby sister, Lillian moved back to her roots, it was decided that Alice needed to also move back to Delaware. This way, Lillian could look after her. The time came in Alice’s life when she could no longer live alone. At which time she became a resident of a nursing home. Her love of The Lord caused her to profess The Love of Jesus Christ to all she came in contact with. She even had a convert, who was an employee at the nursing home. Alice is the last of her generation of the Wisher Family. She lived to be 101 years of age, thus making her, the longest living Wisher, ever. Her presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She leaves in God’s care, to cherish her memories her loving niece and Power of Attorney, Gloria Russum Smith; one god-son, Charles Russum (Dorothy); two god-daughters, Elaine Robinson (Courtney) and Jackie Perry; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
