Mary E. Griffin

Mary Emma Griffin of Centreville, age 86 went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 2, 2014 at her home. She was born on November 17, 1927 to the late Edward Butler and Gladys Estelle Rozier. She was known to all as “Mom”, “Mom-Mom”, “Cousin Womsie”, “Aunt Mary” and “Old Mary.” She was employed as a cafeteria staff worker for Queen Anne’s County Board of Education for 19 years. She also helped with catering at various places and was a hairdresser at her home for several years, prior to retiring in 1990. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends during the holidays and other occasions. She began her Christian life at Gouldtown United Methodist Church as a faithful member in many capacities. She later rededicated her life to Christ at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Centreville, MD, where she served on the Usher’s Board, Kitchen Committee and was a Missionary. She loved her Bethel Church Family and always looked forward to Rev. Gaddy serving her communion during her illness at home, in the hospital and at the nursing home. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 46 and her favorite hymns were “Precious Lord” and “Thunder”. She was a longtime member of the Clarence E. Wilson Post 21 Auxiliary. Precious memories will always be cherished by her son, James E. Griffin, Jr. of Centreville, MD; a special son whom she helped to raise, Charles Thomas of Washington, DC; two daughters, Clara Young (Charles) of Cambridge, MD and Lorraine Jenkins of Centreville, MD; three grandchildren, Cory Young of Washington, DC, Cheryl Young of Orlando, FL and Rayshon Ray of South Carolina; three brothers-in-law, Lewis Burke of Easton, MD, Raymond Burke (Florence) of Wilmington, DE and Robert Burke (Evalena) of Dover, DE; special cousins, Doris Gould of Queenstown, MD, Betty Anne Jenkins (Clyde) of Easton, MD, Elaine Warrick of Grasonville, MD, Oliver Griffin of Hackensack, NJ and James Tilghman of Arlington, FL; special nieces, Joan Lewis (Rendall) of Millington, MD and Blanche Walker of Easton, MD; her Bethel Church Family; Tilghman Terrace friends; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
