Marvin Smith

Marvin Allen Smith was born March 11, 1955 to the late Clemon and Mary Smith of Bridgeville, Delaware. He departed this life on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, Delaware. Marvin, better known as “Big Marvin” and “Freddy”, did his early years of schooling in the Woodbridge School District. Marvin was employed by Gary Davis’s crew for 15 years and the Pet Poultry Corporation in Bridgeville, Delaware, for 25 years where he remained until his retirement. He worked as a supervisor and a forklift driver. Big Marvin met and married his wife of 47 years, Gloria Smith and from this union six children were born. Later, Genesis was added and they raised her as their own. Marvin loved playing basketball, riding his 4-wheeler and racing cars. He enjoyed family gatherings such as barbeques, birthday parties and family reunions. He loved to watch Sanford and Son. Elvis Presley was one of his favorite singers. Big Marvin gave his heart to the Lord in 2007. He attended New Beginnings Ministries under the leadership of Pastor Harry Turner. He later attended Jesus Love Temple in Milford, Delaware, under the leadership of Pastor David Shockley where he was ordained as a deacon. Big Marvin’s grandson, Isaiah Newton, cared for him. He made sure his grandfather’s needs were met, such as giving him water and turning on the cool air as needed. Shi’Wuan Sykes was the grandson that loved to borrow Pop Pop’s shoes. Whenever Sundays would come, Pop Pop always had to call for his shoes to wear to church. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Clemon and Mary Smith; son, Shawnpa Sampson; grandson, Tavyon Sykes; brothers, Michael Smith and Howard Smith; mother-in-law, Lillie Jacobs; father-in-law, Elmer Jacobs; paternal grandparents, Mose and Lillie Smith; maternal grandparents, Mary Mumford and Willie Dennis. Marvin leaves to cherish his memories, his wife Gloria Smith of Greenwood, DE; sons, Marvin Sampson (Lisa) of Milford, DE and Sharone Sampson of Seaford, DE; daughters, Tiffany Lamontagne (Joseph) of Greenwood, DE, Latoria Sampson (Walter) of Seaford, DE and Lindsey Sampson of Greenwood, DE; brothers, Clemon L. Smith Jr. (Debbie), James T. Smith (Viola), Darnell H. Smith (Yvette), Charles E. Smith Sr. (Alberta) and Eugene Smith all of Bridgeville, DE; sister, Brenda L. Smith of Bridgeville, DE; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four uncles; five aunts; two goddaughters, Diamonik Bailey and Brandi Daniels; godson Chase Cephas; several faithful friends such as, Charles Cephas, Jr., Big Butch, Nelson Matthews, Junie Strand and Russell Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Marvin’s final words to his family were, “I love you; and take care of your mom”!
