Marvin L. Dickerson Sr.

Marvin Leroy Dickerson, Sr. was born on September 22, 1930 to the late Mary Berry and the late James Dickerson, Sr. He went home to be with the Lord on January 19, 2016, after a lengthy illness. Marvin, also known as "Dish," grew up in a large family who worked hard and took care of each other. He began his education at Barclay School, a one-room school house which is now the St. Daniels UMC Fellowship Hall. After finishing school, he worked in construction and spent many years working for the Local Labor Union 199 in Delaware. He retired in 1995. As a child, Marvin attended St. Daniels United Methodist Church in Barclay, MD. He later joined Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Marydel, MD, where he served faithfully as a member and trustee. Marvin was also a member of New Beginnings United Methodist Church in Ridgely, MD, where he sang with the United Methodist Men. Marvin was loved by all who knew him. He was quick to help anyone who was in need. He could talk to anyone at length about anything. He was known for gardening, hunting, selling vegetables, and buying recycled and used goods throughout the Eastern Shore. If you wanted to know where to get anything from lawn mowers to hunting dogs, you could call on "Dish.” Marvin and his wife, Louise would often visit their friends and family who loved them both deeply. He was always ready to share advice with his children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He loved driving his grandchildren on tractors and pick-up trucks. Marvin especially enjoyed hosting the big family barbeques in Marydel. His wit and wisdom will be passed onto future generations. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 37 years, Mary Louise Dickerson; children, Marvin Dickerson, Jr. of Wilmington, DE and Karen Carn of Dover, DE. He was also a father to Henry Stephen Fountain, Deborah Bowers, Charlotte Hoxter and Brenda McCove. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Dana Bowser, Kevin Harris, Michael Harris, Marcus Skinner, Erika Wallace, John Mills, Dejuan Belfield, James Murray, Jr., Dallisa Murray, Athena Brown, Milessa Fountain, Stephen Fountain and Royzetta Fountain; his sisters: Geneva Wilson, Edna Cale, Mary Matthews, Virginia Tolson and Doris Dickerson; his brothers, James Dickerson and William Dickerson; his sisters-in-law, Bessie Dickerson, Joyce Banks and Althea Dickerson; and a host of great and great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and hunting buddies. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Stevens; one daughter, Georgeanna Carn; brothers, John Banks and Edward Berry and sisters, Virginia Sadler, Shirley Commodore, Frances Elliot, Catherine Tiller and Leona Banks.
