Madeline V. Purnell

Madeline V. Purnell, fondly known as “Peewee” departed this life on September 11, 2016 at Genesis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Milford, DE. She was born on October 8, 1951 to the late George and Martha Cannon, in Georgetown, DE. She attended Richard Allen Elementary School and the former William C. Jason Comprehensive High School, which is now Delaware Technical Community College. On June 8, 2015 she received her diploma from Bertha Elizabeth Roach Christian High in Georgetown, DE. Madeline married the late Dale Leon Purnell on January 17, 1971 in Salisbury, MD. She has two beautiful children, Harry D. Cannon Sr. and Delenia V. Purnell. Peewee was a long time caregiver for a host of local agencies, with her last job being employed with the Visiting Nurses Association. Her favorite pastimes were playing spades, cooking, spending time with family and friends, completing different puzzle books, and watching Family Feud with her great-grandchildren. Her Christian journey began at Pilgrim’s Ministry of Deliverance under the leadership of Apostle Ivory Hopkins. Afterwards, she attended Solid Rock Church in Ellendale, DE for years. She was attending Dominion Church of Delaware under the leadership of Pastor Anthony Cannon . She loved the Lord and loved to pray for people, always lending a helping hand whenever possible. She is preceded in death by five brothers, George Cannon II, Alfred Cannon, Sr., (Bernice), James Cannon (Mary), William “Billy” Cannon (Carolyn), and Jon “Fatback” Cannon, Sr. (Minnie); her brother-in-law, William Purnell and sister-in-law Delores Purnell. She leaves to cherish her precious memories a son, Harry Cannon, Sr., of Georgetown, DE and daughter Delenia Purnell of Ellendale, DE; 14 grandchildren (4 of whom she raised), 32 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary King and Agnes Cannon of Georgetown, DE; 1 brother, Martin Cannon of Georgetown, DE; 2 brothers-in-law, Charles (Linda) Purnell of Georgetown, DE and Gerald (Florence) Purnell of Richmond, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
