Lucille O. Yelverton

A time to be born: Lucille, the daughter of the late Robert and Lucy Olds was born October 13, 1929 in Kinston, North Carolina. Sisters Effie Mae Williams Gooding, Nora Burney, and Gladys Walker preceded Lucille in death. Brother Randolph Olds lives in Washington, DC. A time to learn: Lucille attended Lenoir County Public Schools in North Carolina and later earned her high school diploma as graduate of James H. Groves Adult High School in Woodside, Delaware. A time to serve and give: Lucille was a member of M. .F. Chase Memorial Church, Whatcoat United Methodist Church, and Church Mother at Beacon Lighthouse Church, all in Delaware. In North Carolina, before moving to Delaware in 1958, Lucille was a member of Free Will Baptist Church. She is also a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Lucille was founding president of Zeta Amicae of Dover, established in 1979, which is an adult auxiliary of the Theta Zeta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Lucille joined the workforce after all six of her children had entered school. She began her career at Playtex in Dover, Delaware. Next, she worked as a seamstress for the historic Apollo Space program at ILC in Frederica, Delaware from 1973 to retirement in 1992. Lucille was also quite an entrepreneur as many knew her throughout Kent County as the “Avon Lady” and for a while her decorated cake business flourished because of her unique creations and her cake’s exceptional taste. Lucille was a great hostess for gatherings at home. She had a passion for people and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved to travel and enjoyed many cultural experiences across the United States and abroad. Lucille loved to sing and liberally shared with family her exceptional talent for cooking, canning, sewing, and money-management. A time to love: Lucille and Worthy Yelverton, Sr. (d) were married 49 years and had six children: Worthy, Jr.(d), Etheldred, Bernadine (husband Ali Abdul- Aleem), Wilford (wife Faye Yelverton), M. Denise, and Robert Kevin (d) (wife Theresa Yelverton). Lucille was especially blessed with her daughter-in-law Faye Yelverton as caregiver and friend, where the two of them had an immense, loving relationship like none other. A time to mourn: At age 88, Lucille entered her eternal resting place Sunday, October 15, 2017, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Leaving a legacy: Lucille’s memory will be forever cherished by grandchildren Sonia, Sophia, Martine & Julius; Stacey, Victoria & Teresa; Darrell, Chaneta, & Glen; Michael, Wilford J., & Juston; Pamela; Dominque, Tiffany & Kaleishia; and great grandchildren.
