Elizabeth Anna Turner (Matthews)

Elizabeth Anna Turner, loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-aunt and great-grandmother, affectionately known as “Sook”, departed this life early Tuesday morning, March 24, 2020, at home after a brief illness. She was 88 years old. Elizabeth was born on Tuesday, February 9, 1932, in Parksley, Virginia, to the late Clifton and Margaret ”Maggie” Matthews, the oldest of 13 children. She was educated in the public schools of Accomac County, Virginia. Elizabeth worked at H&H Poultry in Selbyville, Delaware, for a number of years. Elizabeth worked at Landmark Inn in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, for many years. Elizabeth also worked at Harbor Healthcare in Lewes, Delaware, and was a health aid to Mrs. Jenny Hitchens. She was a Senior Companion for First State Community Action in Georgetown, Delaware to Miss Lily Floyd until her illness. Elizabeth was a member of St. John 2nd Baptist Church in Millsboro, Delaware, where she served on the usher board under the leadership of her pastor, Rev. Annie J. Custis. She was loved by her family, church and friends. Elizabeth had enjoyed traveling with her adopted daughter, Lorraine and other friends from her church around and outside the U.S. She was always ready and willing to help anyone in need. She will be dearly missed by us all. Elizabeth was preceded in death by the love of her life Raymond Matthews Turner, Sr., whom she was married to for 20 years; two daughters, Faith C. Matthews and Anna S. Porter; a granddaughter, Reeyanah Davis; brothers James, Clifton, Jr. and Robert Matthews; and sisters Ada Matthews and Barbara Brown. Elizabeth leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memories: her aunt, Bernice Bradley (Floyd); son, Raymond Turner, Jr. (Sheilah); daughters, Samantha Matthews, Shirley Shellton, Marie Brown and Lorraine Smith (Wade); sisters, Margaret Tull (Eddie) and Valorie Parsons (Charles); brother, Emmanuel Matthews; sister-in-law, Loretta Matthews; grandchildren, Japonica “Tweety” Darkwah (Charles), Quiandra “Kee” Davis (Taj), Russell Davis (Tyniesha), Tyrone Matthews, Sophia Matthews, Taron Matthews (Zhane), Lisa Elmore, Raymond Turner, III, and Joseph Turner; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, great nieces, great nephews and other adopted sons and daughters.
